Supporting People through Effective Treatment

Many of us have wrestled with the need for change. For some change is easy; and for others, it is quite difficult. Therapy is for the latter, when problems don’t or won’t go away on their own.

More recently, Nathan has been working in St Kilda and Richmond providing effective treatment to those in need but is excited to return to the west and the community of Williamstown.

My passion for supporting people to reduce distress and create fulfilment in life is what gives me the energy to do my work. I value the connection with people who feel stuck in life and are wanting to be empowered to change their lives for the better.

Bettina Revens – Counsellor

Bettina Revens, Counsellor

I am a local Williamstown girl, who for many years has aspired to be a Counsellor and work within the western suburbs of Melbourne. I decided to return to study as a mature age student after raising my two children.

After receiving my Diploma in Welfare Studies, I went back again and studied for my Bachelor of Arts (Community Development). I now have a Master of Arts (Counselling). This qualification enables me to work with young children. Adolescents and adults. I have also completed a Clinical/Professional Supervision course.

I work part-time as a Student Wellbeing Counsellor at a local Primary School and have found this to be very fulfilling work. I have gained invaluable experience supporting the complex needs of students and their families. There are numerous and various difficulties that present themselves daily. These may include: anxiety, depression, isolation, stress, bullying, friendship issues, difficulties with social skills, school transitions, separation anxiety, anger management issues, family breakup, trauma, grief and loss to name a few. I enjoy the challenge when working with children on the spectrum and the positive results that have occurred.

Counselling sessions are tailored to suit everyone’s needs, interests and presenting issue(s), this is not a one size fits all approach.

Bettina Revens

When working with children, various techniques are used that may include, drawing, puppet play, social skills games, roleplaying and the utilization of sensory toys for stress reduction. I work from an eclectic approach that may include utilizing therapeutic interventions such as Solution Focused, Strength-based, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Art Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Narrative Therapy and Mindfulness Techniques depending upon the presenting issues and the age of the client.

All counselling is provided in a non-judgemental, safe and confidential environment. I do encourage parents/carers and siblings to seek counselling to ensure that they are supported and their own emotional needs are met. This early intervention has the potential to alleviate stress related illnesses from developing in parents/carers and/or siblings. I am looking forward to working with families in the near future.
